 Dunbar Coming to Flames

The Flames have signed 25 year old Canadian forward John Dunbar.  The 5’8”, 175lb skater opened last season with French 2nd league outfit Mulhouse, piling up 6 goals and 7 assists in 8 starts before returning to North America’s East Coast Hockey League where 61 games produced 19 goals and 50 points.   In the 2 preceding seasons, the Calgary native played college hockey at Northern Alberta Institution of Technology where he was the league’s leading scorer in consecutive years thanks to 65 and 57 point terms in a combined 64 games where he delivered 54 goals and 68 assists.  His team collected back to back league titles and he was also singled out as Player of the year, and a First All Star team selection, in each of the terms.

Dunbar played a pair of full time seasons with Calgary Canucks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League where he was an All Rookie team selection in 2008-2009 and a Southern Conference All Star in 2009-2010.  In 145 AJHL games, he had 62 goals and 95 assists along with another 22 points in 25 playoff starts.  He followed that with a couple of NCAA seasons at Quinnipiac University ahead of his first foray in the pro game with Pensacola Ice Flyers in the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2012-2013. That season also marked his first ECHL try when he played 17 times with Fort Wayne Komets. He split the following schedule between those same clubs before moving closer to home with his NAIT success.

“We don’t always see the players we get ahead of time, but John is someone we have seen play in a very quick, attacking college style where you do not sit back and wait,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon. “He is a speedy, highly skilled forward and has put up some impressive numbers over his career including last season in America.”

“He is not a big guy by any stretch, but he works hard and plays with high intensity, which is not always the case with fine skilled players.”

“We communicated extensively with John while he was looking at his options these past couple of months, and we are very excited that he has agreed to join us for the coming season.”
