12 points back of the league leading Flames just over a month ago, the Manchester Phoenix handed Surrey’s team a 4-1 road defeat on Saturday night, their 9th win on the bounce, to pull within a win of a deadlock on the table summit they claimed last season. The Phoenix took a lead less than halfway through the 1st thanks to a Ben Wood marker. With Matt Towe in the penalty box a Ladislav Harabin powerplay goal doubled their advantage ahead of the break. A scoreless middle frame had the travellers looking for an early period reply on the comeback trail in the final 20 minutes. An early goal was awarded but rather than cut the lead in half, it was the home side who made it a 3 goal margin through Juraj Faith just 25 seconds after the re-start. Slava Koulikov spread the gap a bit further with a powerplay goal at 51:03. David Savage finally got one back for the Flames less than 4 minutes from time to mark the only blemish on a 39 save Steve Fone performance.
