“We are always thrilled to get a new season going,” explained Paul Dixon, “but this particular situation really has us at a whole new level of excitement that is difficult to even express in words.”
“To have had so much time away, and at times where it felt like we were never going to get going again, it is such a great feeling to have fixtures and now to be staring down the start of the season. Getting moving has been troublesome to say the least, and we know there are going to be many more problems and challenges ahead, but we are ready for anything as we finally get back on the ice.”
The Cup competition sees Spectrum’s men in a group with Blaze and Cardiff Devils. Flames will contest 2 home and 2 away matches against each club for a chance at a quarter final spot. Details of advanced rounds will be clearer at a later date.
In league play, which commences for Flames on Sunday, September 26th against Manchester Storm, each opponent will visit Spectrum on 3 occasions, and Flames will venture on the road for the corresponding return visits to make up a 54 league game schedule. The top 8 of 10 teams at the conclusion of the league run will advance to the playoff quarter final weekend on April 16th and 17th to be in with a shot at a Playoff finals berth in Nottingham the weekend after that.
“We have had a great return of support from season ticket holders and I can speak for all the players when I say that opening night cannot come fast enough and we can’t wait to be back out there playing in front of our fans.”
“One thing we note is that we are essentially starting cold without any challenge matches. Not everyone is doing that, but it is a decision that fit best for us in terms of the timing for getting players in and dealing with quarantine and Covid related issues that are not normally on the agenda. Many leagues around the world have done similar so we are comfortable that a good set of training sessions in advance of that first cup game will be enough to help get us started.”
