December 21st v Coventry Blaze - League

In a battle of netminders, Travis Fullerton just edged it out by making 32 of 33 saves then performed flawlessly on penalties to lift the Flames to a 2-1 home win over the visiting Coventry Blaze.

About 8 minutes into the contest Ian Watters put the Flames on the board with their only regulation strike when he converted a John Dunbar feed on the powerplay and that led held up through the first frame.

In the middle set, the backstoppers split 21 shots nearly exactly 50-50 with Fullerton taking the odd extra but CJ Motte at the other end joining him on a perfect frame.

Fullerton was the busier of the pair in the 3rd and Coventry pressure paid off late when Andrew Johnston netted just over a minute from time to secure themselves at least a point.

Overtime solved nothing, but a pair of Flames goals on penalties, the first by Watters and another by TJ Foster were more than they needed to take the win thanks to a perfect 4 for 4 run by Fullerton during the tiebreaking procedure.

“Fully kept us level in the first 5-6 minutes when we could barely get out of our end so that was an important part of the game where he held us in when we didn’t have a great start,” explained Paul Dixon.

“We came on a lot better as the game went on and it was just a good game by both teams with good defensive coverage and good goaltending then when you get into overtime and penalties you are rolling dice at that stage so we are glad that our numbers came up and we were able to put up the win.”
