December 22nd at Coventry Blaze - League

Coventry Blaze scored before the ice was barely dry then added a couple more in the opening frame for a 3 goal unanswered run across 20 minutes that set the stage for a huge lead and eventually an 8-3 defeat of the visitors from Spectrum; in the process snapping a Flames 7 game League winning stretch.

Blaze took just 63 seconds to register their opener when Luke Ferrara beat Wouter Peeters for the lead.  They tacked on another just over the period’s halfway point thanks to Matt Pohlkamp who followed up with his 2nd a little over 3 minutes later.

90 seconds into the middle set, Chris Pohlkamp widened the gap to 4 and Janne Laakkonen piled another one on in the 27th minute to hold a 5-0 lead through the 2nd period.

59 ticks into the 3rd it was more of the same when Dillon Lawrence netted to chase Peeters from the net in favour of Mike Will.  Andrew Johnston added another nearly immediately for a 7-0 gap.  Cam Braes got Flames on the board in the 43rd minute and Calle Ackered added another at 44:15 on a powerplay. Less than 8 minutes from close Blaze ended how they started and grabbed another through Johnston, with Ferguson sneaking in a third goal for the Flames to close out the evening.

“Sometimes it’s not going to be your night and that definitely was not our night,” admitted Paul Dixon.

“They scored early and when you have to play about 59 minutes from behind, fairly early on well behind, it’s a very difficult task to turn that ship around.”

“At this stage I think we should be careful about over responding to one night.  I think we must fit it into what has gone on for an extended stretch where we have won 7 straight league games before this, and probably only lost 2-3 games over the last 20 games or so.  We have played a lot of good hockey, and we’re not going to let one game alter the perception of where we are now.”

“The best course of action is to flush this one, enjoy a very short Christmas break then try to be fresh again when Cardiff comes to us on Boxing Day.
