December 28th at Cardiff Devils - League

Flames had a slim lead through 40 minutes but a couple of Cardiff Devils 3rd period strikes against no reply helped them to a 5-4 win over the visitors from Surrey.

Jesse Craige opened the Flames account in the 13th minute but a Devils goal by Joey Martin shortly after levelled it at 1.  The Welsh side took a lead thanks to a Mike McNamee powerplay strike at 17:19, but 6 seconds from period close a Calle Ackered answer had the game knotted at a pair each.

A little over 5 minutes into the middle set, Joey Hadded set Devils back in front but a pair from Spectrum’s gang in the back half of the 2nd turned the lead over again.  Owen Griffiths equalized at 33:33 and Brett Ferguson at 37:31 had Flames with a slight edge through 40 minutes.

That difference was erased a little under 7 minutes from time with McNamee’s 2nd of the contest and Devils put it away before regulation timed out when Haddad’s 2nd counted the winner during a delayed penalty at 54:44.

“That’s a hard way to lose a couple of points,” explained Paul Dixon. “We had a chance to close it out and get a massive road win against one of the league’s top clubs, but it just wasn’t meant to be today.”

“It’s disappointing but we can’t dwell on it too much because we have a lot of hockey coming up and we don’t want whatever has happened before to impact what happens next.”

“We’ll dust ourselves off and get ready for back to back against Manchester Jan 1st and 2nd where we’ll try to bank some points to kick off the New Year.”
