After getting behind early, the Cardiff Devils bagged 3 unanswered 2nd period goals to put the Flames behind by a deficit from which they could not quite recover during a 3-2 defeat in front of a sold out Spectrum crowd.
A Flames powerplay put Spectrum’s men in front at 4:03 when Calle Ackered got one by Ben Bowns and that slim margin held up through the opening frame.
Just over 3 minutes into the 2nd, the Devils pulled it even with a Stephen Dixon strike. They took a lead with a 32nd minute Evan Mosey goal then added a bit of insurance before the 3rd thanks to a Mark Richardson marker at 34:12.
Early in the 3rd period TJ Foster cut the Flames deficit to a single. The home team poured on the pressure for most of the final frame including a last ditch 6 on 5 effort with Chris Carrozzi on the Flames bench, but in the end couldn’t pull even before time ran out.
“It is a shame we were unable to keep it closer in the 2nd period, because we really put on a lot of pressure in the 3rd once we pulled it back to a goal,” explained Head Coach Paul Dixon.
“They are not a team that you can spot a lead of a couple of goals because they are so solid in their own end.”
“Even in the 3rd when we had the best share of the play, they block shots, get sticks in the way, clog up lanes and just generally make it difficult not only to score but to even get the puck to the net.”
“We see them again on Tuesday and hopefully we can find a way to turn it around and pick up the win.”
