February 12th v Fife Flyers - League

1

Final

5

A significant territorial advantage and a wide shot differential was not enough as the home ice Flames still ended up on the wrong side of a 5-1 score against Fife Flyers.

Flyers stepped in front with a Mike McNicholas goal at 7:57 and despite the Flames holding an 11-4 shot advantage over the opening 20 minutes, they still began the 2nd a goal off the pace.

The shot advantage grew wider as the 2nd period progressed but so did the Flyers goal margin. At 26:42, they doubled their lead through Bari McKenzie.  Brett Ferguson cut the difference in half a few minutes later, but a 33rd minute Jacob Benson powerplay strike and then a Tommi Jokinen penalty shot 81 seconds from period time had the visitors in command 4-1 despite trailing on the shot clock by a 29-12 gap.

A few more opportunities in the final set also were not able to be converted before a late frame Flyers powerplay goal extended to the final goal differential in direct opposition to a Flames 42-17 shot advantage.

“As a team or a coach, there is not that much you can say about a game like that,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“We should have been in front from about 3 minutes into the game, but any break there was to be had around a net certainly went the way of the Flyers all night long.  We had many quality chances to be in the lead and lead for the bulk of the game, but it ended up being backwards relative to the traffic and shot flow of the game and once you get behind then it is more of an uphill battle the rest of the way.  At the end of the day you don’t win many games with 1 goal.”

“We have another chance tomorrow night in Coventry, and we have no choice but to have a short memory on this one, but hopefully we can generate some good chances in that one and try to play from in front to make our work a bit easier.”
