February 13th at Coventry Blaze - League

1

Final

5

On the road at Coventry Blaze, Flames took advantage of some early powerplay time with a couple of 1st period extra man goals and another 5 on 5 to set themselves to a 3-0 lead on their way to a 5-1 win.

The man advantage time helped the visitors to a 27-4 shot lead in the opening frame and Flames made the most it scoring just over 8 minutes in taking advantage of a 5 on 3 powerplay with John Dunbar finishing the play.  With 3:36 on the clock, they extended through Jamal Watson. Another late period Flames 5 on 3 powerplay went through the 2-man differential but back to 5 on 4 and Dunbar added his 2nd of the evening 33 seconds from time and the visitors went to break ahead by 3.

With a much more moderate shot advantage in the middle set, Brett Ferguson helped Flames to a 4-goal spread through 40 minutes when he netted at 35:37.

Blaze hit the scoresheet in the back half of the 3rd when Ryan Penny broke Kevin Lindskoug’s bid for a shutout, but it was a cosmetic change to the ultimate outcome with Flames taking the table points on top of a 51-21 shot gap.

“We were glad to be able to take advantage of some of the powerplay time,” explained Paul Dixon, “because there are occasions where you don’t and then the other team is able to use that to put a little wind in their own sails to turn it in their favour.”

“Unlike the night prior when we also had largest share of possession in the 1st period, we were able to convert and be in a lead to put Coventry in the unenviable position of trying to play from behind for a lot of the night.”

“It’s a big win for us, and we are looking forward to our meeting with Coventry again on Wednesday, this time on home ice.”
