February 19th v Belfast Giants - League

Belfast Giants spent Wednesday night on Spectrum ice and took an early lead they would never relinquish during an eventual 5-1 win over the Flames.

The Northern Irish side scored just over 7 minutes in through Curtis Hamilton.  Liam Morgan added another a couple minutes later to double the difference. A TJ Foster reply at 10:35 cut the Flames deficit in half through the opening 20 minutes, but that was as close as they would get.

Giants were able to move ahead by a pair once again just over halfway through the middle frame thanks to a Lewis Hook re-direct of a Liam Reddox drive.  Flames best chance to get closer was a late 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity, but they couldn’t find the net and the period closed trailing Giants by 2.

Early in the 3rd, Belfast opened the gap a bit bigger through Elgin Pearce and that was more than they ultimately needed to secure the points, but they went on to add a late David Goodwin empty netter to complete the result.

“Looking back on the game we really needed to get at least 1 goal on that 5 on 3 near the end of the 2nd period,” claimed Head Coach Paul Dixon. “That could be looked at as a real turning point.”

‘We were down a couple at that time and even a single would have put us in a much better position to start the 3rd, especially since that period was by far our best  on the night. As it was they were able to come out and get that early one to put us in a position from which we were not likely to escape then tacked on the empty netter when we were desperate to try and find a way through.”

“Defeat is always disappointing but we don’t have time to dwell on it too much with Cardiff and Nottingham coming up this weekend so we will have to quickly get turned around to be ready for those games.”
