February 9th at Belfast Giants - League

Flames fell behind by 4 goals and after a couple of replies that cut the difference were stung for 3 more on the way to a 7-2 defeat in the closing game of a 2 night stay at Belfast Giants.

About 3 and a half minutes into the 1st, Giants jumped out to a lead thanks to a Jonathan Ferland marker, and they doubled the difference on a powerplay at the back end of the frame when Jordan Smotherman sent them to the break up by the pair.

Kendall McFaull extended the lead about halfway through the contest and Chris Higgins seconds later had the home team in command at 4-0.

Just 41 seconds into the 3rd, and on a powerplay, the Flames finally put one on the board through Calle Ackered.  Kruise Reddick made it 4-2 at 49:11, but thoughts of a comeback were erased when Giants buried their opponents with 3 straight in the back half of the set.  David Rutherford on the powerplay at 52:37 re-stored a 3 goal gap.  Jonathan Boxill less than a minute after that made it 6-2 and Josh Roach 20 seconds later closed the evening’s offence and the one sided Giants result.

“The upside of a 3 game weekend is that after a couple of games here, we have another chance to feel a bit better about ourselves tomorrow night,” said Paul Dixon.

“Unfortunately, we are up against the league leaders when Cardiff Devils visit, but after a one sided defeat like tonight, getting back to it is best for all of us.”

“The score in Belfast was not a true reflection of the entire direction of play through the night, but certainly it is difficult to have to get through an evening like that were you are so far behind for so much of the contest.”

“In times like these we need to find a way to lean on each other and use it as a way to get stronger together, and hopefully look for better results ahead.”
