Flames scored early, but Cardiff Devils replied quickly and then added more on their way to a 6-2 road win over Spectrum’s men.
Just 25 seconds in, Flames edged in front thank to a Chris Gerrie strike, but Devils were even when Mark Richardson scored about 5 minutes later and the knotted scoreline remained on the board through the rest of the frame.
Jake Coughler put Devils in front 41 ticks after re-start and his 2nd of the contest a few minutes later had the visitors in front by a pair. A short handed Jamal Watson marker at 28:01 ensured Flames would go to break only a goal away with the final period ahead, but they would get no closer thanks to trio of 3rd period Devils goals that sealed their win.
In the 48th minute Stephen Dixon re-stored the 2 goal cushion. They added another when Trevor Cox netted during a late run of 4 on 4 play and a last minute Sam Duggan goal closed out their evening.
“It’s hard to know even what to say right now because we are on probably the most unsuccessful stretch that I ever recall here,” offered Head Coach Paul Dixon.
“It seems like if there is something bad that can happen to us right now it does. When we make a mistake it’s a goal against, and when we try to jump on an opponent mistake it feels like there is always something that just prevents what should turn into a goal.”
“It certainly is not a lack of effort or desire, but somehow we have to find a way to get this turned around and find some answers for ourselves. Hopefully, a normal full week of training will help put us back in the kind of groove that will end up with results.”
“Confidence and success are a chicken and egg deal. What comes first? A lot easier to be confident when you are having success, but we are going to need to find it despite this run of results. We are going to work hard this week not only physically, but also work hard at keeping a positive frame of mind so that we can put in the work we need to gain confidence that we can get a result Saturday when Nottingham stops in.”
