January 22nd v Belfast Giants - League

2

Final

5

On Wednesday night, Belfast Giants jumped out to a 2 goal lead in the first 16 minutes and never looked back on the way to a 5-2 win over the Flames on Spectrum ice.

Scott Conway put the visitors in front at 12:16. Ciaran Long doubled the difference at 15:04, but a 17th minute Matt Alvaro strike cut the deficit in half before the break.

Early in the 2nd, Daniel Tedesco was sent off for the night with a Slew Footing Major. Flames killed off the entire penalty without any damage but a pair of ensuing Giants goals in the 33rd minute and again 37 seconds from period time put them in a 4-1 driver’s seat to begin the 3rd.

A Belfast penalty for kneeing put the Flames powerplay to work and they were able to trim the deficit thanks to a Brett Ferguson strike, but as time wound down, with Flames net empty and a powerplay to skate with a 6 on 4 skater advantage, Giants iced the result 6 seconds from close when Gabe Bast buried the 5th into the vacated cage.

Eamon McAdam made the Flames start and had 21 saves on 25 shots against Tom McCollum for Belfast who was 17 of 19.

“You know you are in for a tough night when the league leaders area on the opposite bench,” said Paul Dixon.

“They played an excellent game and put us on the back foot relatively early and we just couldn’t fully recover.”

“When we killed off that long penalty to Daniel Tedesco we were hoping we could turn the kill into some momentum but unfortunately they were able to score not long after that then added another to put us on a hill we couldn’t climb.”

“With Daniel gone, and Brett Welychka leaving early through injury, we found ourselves very short again up front and, in the circumstances, we have to credit the guys for a great work ethic throughout.”

“Belfast are the top team for a reason and we have to quickly shift away from this result and hope we head into Friday at Nottingham with a good mindset and a couple more players than finished tonight to try and change our fortunes there.”
