Steelers had a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes to take a lead they would not hand back the rest of the way as the Flames dropped a 4-1 game at Sheffield.
Less than 4 minutes in Maxim Golod put Steelers in front. Mark Simpson doubled the difference, but a 5 on 3 powerplay goal by Ethan Strang at 16:12 had Flames back within a single to start the 2nd.
Time was on short supply in the middle frame when Steelers re-stored their 2 goal cushion, this one off the stick of Daniel Leavens at 36:43.
In the last 2 minutes of the 3rd, Flames pulled netminder Jake Kupsky in favour of an extra skater but a Charlie Dodero minor penalty a little over a minute out meant Flames could only play 5 on 5 to close it out and Golod bagged the empty netter to complete the final tally.
“Last time here was a bit of a horror movie for us so certainly this was a massive improvement on that, but moral victories don’t count for any points,” said Paul Dixon.
“We were able to outshoot them but we need to find a way to create more of the really high quality chances to give ourselves a better chance on any given night, regardless of who we play.”
“We have Fife at home tomorrow so we get another opportunity and guys will be ready to put in a performance that we hope will bank a couple of table points.”
